While Smashing Pumpkins fans wait patiently in anticipation of the band’s North American arena tour with Jane’s Addiction, the band has offered up an expected treat: a brand new song, "Beguiled," which serves as the lead single for the band’s just-announced 12th album, ATUM.
In true Pumpkins fashion, ATUM (pronounced “Autumn”) isn’t just an album. Rather, it’s a 33-song rock opera in three acts that Billy Corgan has said he envisions as a sequel to the band’s 1995 album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina/The Machines of God.
As for what, exactly, we should expect from ATUM is anyone’s guess. But what we can say with certainty is that “Beguiled” is a true-to-form Smashing Pumpkins rocker. You can check it out above.
ATUM itself will be released in three sections, with each of the acts comprised of 11 tracks. The first act will be released on November 15, with subsequent acts scheduled for January 31 and April 21, 2023. Fans can preorder a boxed set with all 33 tracks plus 10 additional unreleased songs here.
Additionally, Corgan has announced a new podcast series, Thirty-Three with William Patrick Corgan, where he will be revealing each of ATUM‘s tracks. The first two episodes, featuring the songs “Atum” and “Butterfly Suite,” are available now.
Finally, Smashing Pumpkins will also perform ‘Beguiled’ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday, September 23.
