The Pantera tribute tour kicks of tonight in Mexico

Pantera, consisting of core members Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown, along Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante, will take the stage for the first time in over 20 years at Mexico's Hell & Heaven Metal Fest tonight (December 2). The performance will kick off the group’s much-anticipated tribute tour, which will hit South America this winter before coming to Europe and U.S. later in 2023.

In advance of tonight’s show, Crowbar guitarist Kirk Windstein, who is also Anselmo’s band mate in sludge metal heroes Down, has posted a photo to Facebook of the foursome rehearsing onstage at Hell & Heaven. “I know they’re going to crush it tonight!” Windstein writes in the post.

Benante recently spoke with Metal Edge about the Hell & Heaven date, telling us, "I’m probably gonna need a couple of drinks to be honest with you, to kinda settle me down. I need to get that first Pantera show under the belt.”

Asked if he’s looking forward to any performing any particular Pantera tracks, Benante revealed there will be a pair of deep cuts he’s got his eye on.

“I enjoy each one of them,” he said of the set. “When I look down at the list, I’m like, ‘Oh, I like this song,’ that type of thing. There’s two odd songs in there too that I don’t think they played, consistently, throughout [their] sets. Those are the two songs I enjoy playing the most, I think.”
