The Stadium Tour rolled into Detroit’s Comerica Park on July 10, but just one night before being invaded by Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett, the venue played host to an artist of a rather different stripe – Billy Joel. And the Piano Man, in his own unique way, managed to bridge the gap between ‘80s hard rock riffery and keyboard-led melodic pop by bringing out Joe Elliott, in town with a night off, for a duet on Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar On Me.”
This wasn’t the first time Joel had gotten his rock on. In the past he’s welcomed Axl Rose to his stage to sing AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” and Joel’s own “Big Shot,” while Brian Johnson has duetted with him on AC/DC’s "You Shook Me All Night Long." As for Elliott, the Comerica Park performance was actually the third time he has sung “Pour Some Sugar on Me” with Joel, following a 2018 gig at Fenway Park in Boston and a Madison Square Garden appearance the following year.
