Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci is currently out on his first-ever headlining solo tour in support of his 2020 album, Terminal Velocity. And in addition to characteristic head-spinning licks and solos, he also has something else special along for the ride – former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.
Petrucci kicked off the tour at the Strand Ballroom & Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 5, and the show marked the first time the former band mates had played together onstage since Portnoy exited Dream Theater on less-than-amicable terms a dozen years ago.
Portnoy and Petrucci have since patched things up personally. And judging by the drummer’s performance both on the Terminal Velocity record and the stage in Providence, his musical chemistry with Petrucci is as vibrant as ever.
