Letter from the Editor
November, 1986. My very first issue of Metal Edge.
I was still several birthdays away from hitting my know-it-all teen years, yet old enough and wise enough to fully understand that rock ‘n’ roll – and in particular the hard rock and metal of Ozzy, Metallica, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Ratt and, most of all, Mötley Crüe – was the best music ever.
And so here I was, staring at the rows of magazines at the local newsstand, with Mick, Nikki, Vince and Tommy, decked out in tuxedos and bowties and looking like the most badass wedding bartenders in history, staring back at me. I grabbed the issue, asked (maybe begged) my parents to buy it for me, took it home to read cover to cover and then, like any self-respecting ‘80s kid, chopped it up for parts, plastering every Mark Weiss and Neil Zlozower photo to my bedroom walls.
It hardly feels like a reach to say that scores of rock fans who came of age during that era have similar memories. And while Metal Edge quickly became known for cramming as many full-color pics as possible into each issue, the fact is the reporting (yes, I bought it for the articles) was some of the best in the business, with unmatched artist access and a conversational, fly-on-the-wall reporting style that had the effect of making a kid out in the ’burbs feel like he, too, was on the line when Vince Neil called in to give an update on all things Crüe, and hanging in the backstage dressing room as Sebastian Bach plopped down for a post-show chat.
As hard rock and metal cycled through changes and trends in the ’90s and 2000s, so did Metal Edge, keeping up with the times (hello Pantera…and Korn…and Slipknot…) while also remaining steadfast in its coverage of the rockers that the title built its name on. I can say that the magazine played a not-insignificant role in my own music education and fandom, as well as my ensuing career as a music journalist and musician, during which time I have had the opportunity to interview these artists, write books about these artists, and even play onstage alongside them.
Back in the day, Metal Edge’s mix of exclusive artist interviews, onstage, backstage, in-the-studio and behind-the-scenes reporting, up-to-the-minute news and high-quality photography helped to define the look, sound and feel of heavy music. Now, that distinctive voice and perspective is back, as we proudly present to you the brand-new Metal Edge.
In our current fully-digital incarnation (and who knows - there very well might be some specials and collector's editions, print and otherwise, in our future), Metal Edge will continue to keep it hard ‘n’ heavy with in-depth reporting on rock legends, contemporary icons and tomorrow’s stars, today. We have a stellar team of writers, photographers and advisors on board, as well as former editor-in-chief Paul Gargano, who took the magazine to new heights in the ’90s and 2000s and has been the keeper of the Metal Edge flame ever since.
So dive in now for new content on your favorite current bands and iconic legends, as well as all the latest and greatest goings-on in hard rock and metal. And since so many of you have been asking about the articles you grew up reading, we’ve created a special Archive section to reintroduce some of the best interviews, reported features, artist roundups and more from the title’s almost 40-year history. We’re kicking things off with an exclusive feature with the one and only Nikki Sixx, who was more than happy to usher in the new era of Metal Edge as our very first interview subject. As always, Mr. Sixx was open, honest and ready to follow the conversation down whatever sordid and revealing paths we chose to pursue.
He did, however, leave the tux at home this time.
